About the Game
What is ChronoBeats?
ChronoBeats is a music-based party game hosted on a single device, making it easy to setup and play anywhere with an internet connection. Check out "How to Play" for more information.
How long does a typical game last?
A typical game lasts between 5-20 minutes depending on the number of players and how quickly guesses are made. For instance, a 2-player game could wrap up after one song, while a 6-player game may at least 5 songs. While ChronoBeats does not enforce a strict time limit, groups who want a faster paced game may opt to "house rule" a time limit for each turn.
How many players can join a game?
ChronoBeats is designed for 2-6 players. Although we can theoretically add infinitely more players, 6 players is the maximum sweet spot to prevent a long wait time between turns. For groups larger than 6, we recommend teaming up.
What is the recommended age to play?
ChronoBeats is best suited for players aged 13 and up. While younger music fans can certainly enjoy the game, please note that some songs in the catalog may include lyrics or themes intended for a more mature audience. For those younger fans, parental guidance is recommended.
Can I play offline?
After the game starts, you can play this game offline, however the music source will require an internet connection.
Where can I report a bug?
You can report a bug in the "Contact us" page.
Cost
Is ChronoBeats free to play?
Yes! You can play the web version of ChronoBeats for free with ads. If you prefer an ad-free experience, you can support me by purchasing ChronoBeats on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Why are there ads? Why does it cost money to download the app?
Unfortunately, there is a nontrivial cost to host this game on the cloud. All revenue generated from ads and app downloads will help subsidize those costs and keep ChronoBeats available for everyone in the world to enjoy.
Do I need a dedicated non-playing DJ to play the songs?
No, players can "DJ" for each other.
Music & Playback
Do I need a Spotify or YouTube account to play?
You do not need a Spotify account or YouTube account to play ChronoBeats. By default, you can listen to songs through YouTube with ads. If you already have a Spotify account, you can use that as well, even with ads. For the best experience, a YouTube Premium or Spotify Premium subscription lets you enjoy uninterrupted, ad-free playback.
Why use a QR code instead of embedding a YouTube or Spotify player?
While we recognize that integrating the player directly into the game would make things simpler, licensing restrictions with YouTube embeds and Spotify’s API Terms of Service prevent us from doing so. Attempting to embed those players in our game's context would result in us being blocked from accessing those external services. That said, we are always exploring possible alternatives and improvements.
Why does the music in Spotify/YouTube stop when I switch back?
Please check and review your Spotify/YouTube membership (or lack thereof) to see if it supports playback in the background. You may need to find an alternative setup (i.e. a second device) to play.
Gameplay
What if two songs were released in the same year?
If multiple songs came out in the same year, they are treated as equal in the game. You can place your card either before or after another song from that year in the timeline. Both positions will be counted as correct since the exact release month or day is not considered.
Do I need to get the exact song title and artist to gain a coin?
You do not need to input the exact song title and artist, but it needs to be very close. For song titles, for example, you can input "dont stop me now" for "Don’t Stop Me Now (Remix)", but not "do not stop me now". For artists, for example, you can input "beyonce" for "Beyoncé", but not "beyoncee". If all players agree that your guess is reasonable while the correctness algorithm does not, you may opt to use the Console to gain yourself a coin.
